Floral Cyanotype Workshop
Join Camera Exposure’s own Caitie Boreliz and Bailey Douglass for this hour-long workshop as they walk you through the process of creating beautiful floral cyanotypes.
Participants will be given an overview of cyanotypes, how they work, and what you need to make them at home. You will also be able to select a small arrangement of flowers from the Bloom Bar for printing and to take home, provided by Disco Bloom Flowers.
Each participant will make (1) 9x12 and (2) 4x6 prints to take home. Participants will also take home a small floral arrangement.
No photography or printing experience is required. Sign up at this link for the 2 p.m. or 3 p.m. time slots. Admission is only $40.
Bizarre Bazaar Vending Machine Opening
Come celebrate the launch of Bizarre Bazaar’s newest location here at Camera Exposure!
This one-of-a-kind vending machine will be turned into the most exclusive photo gallery in town, filled with 4x6 prints from local photographers.
Refreshments will be provided by Torque Coffee. Dog treats will be available for all furry friends.
Group Gallery Show - The Surrealist Lens
Surrealism evokes the unconscious mind, or dreams. It challenges logic and reality in order to present a higher or inner truth or idea.
On Saturday, July 12, join us in exploring Surrealism with a summer group show at Safelight Labs.
Beginning 6/9, we are accepting submissions for inclusion in this show, which will feature 25 artists, with images/prints up to 11x14 (including frame). Any photo-based medium is acceptable, including photographs, alternative printing, and collage. Submissions will be considered on a first-come-first-served basis.
Participation and Submission requirements:
Send us your image and info about how it fits within the theme. You can email this to info@safelightlabs.com.
Images must be acceptable for a PG-13 audience.
Artists should be able to drop their print off for hanging on 7/10 - 7/11 and present at the show on 7/12.
Shelter Island Photo Walk

From there, we’ll walk to the Japanese Friendship Bell at the end of the island and back.

Professional Photography Workshop with Colman McVaney
On Sunday, January 26, Safelight Labs will host photographer Colman McVaney, who will share lessons about becoming a professional photographer. The fee for the workshop is $200 and signups are open on Colman’s website, where he shares this info about the learning experience:
“This class will be focused on what to do and what it takes to make it as a professional photographer. We will focus a lot on the many mistakes I made in my time pursuing this as my career.
A lot of topics will be covered. Some of these include: how do I market myself, how do I pose people, how do I become full time, what do I do for contracts? It will be 60% how to manage a business and 40% shooting and technical info.”

Print Hang
Event Details:
Print out your favorite photograph that represents you as a photographer and bring it to our first Print Hang! Print it, hang it, and hang out! We will be opening the doors to hang your work at 5pm with a general reception to the public starting at 6pm. There is no theme for this event - bring a piece that represents you as a photographer or something that you’d like to share with others. Keep in mind that this is a family-friendly event; let’s keep it classy San Diego. The event will last until 9pm at which time you can remove your work.
1 submission per person
Maximum print size (including optional framing): 11x14
Label the back of your piece with your name and phone number
Optional gallery labels with artist/photo info can be provided by Safelight
Artwork must be hangable via command strips or masking tape
Command strips and tape will be provided by Safelight
Day of event:
Artists can show up starting at 5pm to hang their work. Enter the studio under the awning that says Camera Exposure. First come first served for placement choice.
Open to general public starting at 6pm until 9pm.
At 9pm, event shuts down and each artist is required to remove their print and take it home.
If you can’t stay until closing, you are required to make arrangements to pick up your print by end of day on Monday, July 15th. Any artwork left behind and not claimed, will be considered abandoned.

Black & White Silver Gelatin Print Making Workshop
Join us for this special workshop! We will teach you basic darkroom practices, help you prepare your negative, make a test strip, and complete a traditional 8x10 black and white silver gelatin print. Once the basic lesson is over, you have the rest of the time to experiment making prints from other negatives.
